The cover of Puck magazine, April 6th, 1901.

The image depicts a personification of the United States (“Columbia”) wearing a “Easter bonnet” of a warship that proclaims her a world power.  Columbia’s dress is military in theme and she has a small cannon and a bayonet hanging from her belt (along with a pocket watch and a small bag that appears to read “US”).  The smoke from the warship/hat proclaims EXPANSION.

A color print from 1887 depicting a group of cyclists on penny-farthings.  Note the three-wheeled version designed so that women could cycle while seated (rather than astride), maintaining social convention and the gender divide in fashion.  Only a few years later, female sport enthusiasts, such as cyclists, were wearing bloomers instead of skirts, and were enjoying the same freedom of movement as men.
