French Emperor Napoleon III seated with German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck following the Battle of Sedan in 1870. The French forces were soundly defeated at Sedan and soon thereafter a revolution in Paris ousted the French Second Empire. The new French Third Republic would attempt to carry on the fight against the German forces, resulting in the Siege of Paris. As a result of the German states’ victory in the Franco-Prussian War, a united German Empire would be created in early 1871 under Prussian hegemony.
